The throwaway story that took a moonshot.
I’ve been writing on Medium off an on for the past year or so, it’s a nice platform with a built in community of engaged readers.
Sometimes I spend a lot of time researching and writing, other times I just crank something out while waiting for one of my kids to get out of swim practice.
I Keep Losing My Best Employees is an article I cranked out in under an hour because I had a lot of crap going on in my head due to one of my team members finding another job.
The number of negative comments it received is amazing to me. I think that’s an indicator that people don’t really read the story, they read the headline, skim a few paragraphs, then post some heated response based out of whatever crazy ass shit is rattling around in their brain.
The most highlighted passage in the story is this:
I’ve found that people that attack others at work are weak, ineffective, and trying to cover for their inadequacies. I try to stomp that shit out whenever I can because it will 100% ruin your team.
So quite a few people get it, and there were some comments from readers that know that the headline of the story is a tongue in cheek assertion.
I’m a type A, alpha male, MF’er that hates bullies and sticks up for the underdog. I’m definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s perfect, it take all types. Right? :-)
The world needs more people that stand up for other people.
Anyhoo. On with the show.
I am guilty of NOT focusing over the past few months.
I’ve been spending a lot of time on other projects, like keeping the wheels from falling off the shit show that is my day job (hard to do when I’ve been working from home office for over a year now) and keeping my kids motivated about finishing their school year strong. They aren’t motivated at all, not having the high school experience they’ve been looking forward to by any stretch.
But many of us are facing the same nonsense.
Focus. Do your thing. That one thing that you know will improve your life or financial situation or both.
I’m going to focus on writing a few stories each week, because you never know when something is going to resonate with an audience and take off. And it’s just fun to write.
I’m also working on a series of small courses and books on project management and Systems Engineering. I think these two skills (careers?) are where it’s at for the foreseeable future. A lot of money and availability of remote work around the world.
I hope you all had a good week and a Happy Mothers Day to all you Moms out there.
Enjoy your day (I think you all should have your own month!)
My Mom (who is 75 and still working 4 days a week in her business) has always been a huge inspiration for me.
She has beaten cancer, been screwed over in business dealings but never let it make her bitter, and has managed to stay married to my Dad for over 55 years.
The world needs more strong, kick ass women in it, so if you have a Mom or a daughter, encourage them to be fiercely independent and live the life THEY want to live.
Thank you. I know this isn’t like most of the email lists that are out there, because I’m not really selling anything other than my words.
So thank you so very much for being a paid subscriber.
Please reach out at any time if there is anything specific you would like to discuss.
I read all my emails.
